Ha studiato alla Juilliard School of Performing Arts. Il suo nome si lega al personaggio di Superman, da lui più volte interpretato. (“Superman” I, II, III, IV). Nel 1995 ha subito un terribile incidente a cavallo, in seguito al quale è rimasto paralizzato. Dal 1997 c’è una stella con il suo nome al Walk of Fame.
